  • Since 1996 SEALS (Sanctuary Education Awareness and Long Term Stewardship) volunteers have help protect pupping harbor seals in the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary
  • More than 65 volunteers monitor harbor seals in Tomales Bay and Bolinas Lagoon in Marin County
  • In 2000, SEALS volunteers donated 614 hours to the program for an equivalent value of $10,438
  • The number of harbor seal pups at the SEALS observation sites has increased, reversing an alarming decline for the first time in 15 years
  • Volunteers also participate in a collaborative effort conducting harbor seal population counts throughout northern and central California
  • SEALS volunteers have reduced 95% of the disturbance to harbor seals from clam diggers on Clam and Seal Islands in Tomales Bay
